Alan Soutar

A long time resident of Terrace, Alan now lives in Nelson BC painting full time in this Kootenay centre of the arts. He has had previous successful shows in Terrace and loves to travel the north west to paint and visit friends.

His work includes all mediums and subjects including landscapes and floral works.

From a gallery in Nelson and Eugene Oregon his paintings are now hanging in homes across Europe and north America.

I first became interested in stained glass when I lived in England. I remember walking into those old churches built hundreds of years ago feeling the coolness of the air on a hot summers day. Most of all though, it was the feeling of awe, looking at the sun shining through the beautiful stained glass windows. When working with glass you never really know how the colours will work together. I still love that moment when a piece of work is finished and you hold it up to the light.

Until recently, I lived by the side of a wet land in the Slocan Valley. It was not the catkins on the trees that told me that spring had arrived, but the sound of frogs beginning to sing, as the last snow was melting. Just for fun I began making frogs, individual frogs, frogs with, I hope a personality. I really enjoy finding a name for each one.

I am still working on designing different pieces, exploring the spaces between the glass, coloured and clear and three-dimensional. I hope that you will enjoy my work as much as I do creating it.
